Copperwood Fences
Our signature fence is Copperwood. These fences are made from locally-harvested pine, which grows relatively slowly at the elevations found here in the Ozark Mountains. We process almost all of the lumber that we make our fence from right here at our sawmills. The combination of slow-growth timber and copper naphthenate applied in our pressure chamber produces a beautiful, long-lasting, natural wood fence.
Layton's Ozark Timber Sawmill and Fencing, LLC uses Copper Naphthenate (CuNap) dissolved in petroleum hydrocarbon to obtain a 1.8% treating solution, which is pressurized into southern yellow pine to create our unique fences. We chose this solution largely because of the relative safety to humans and other mammals. Copper Naphthenate is a mild, non-restricted use, EPA registered pesticide. This is what protects Copperwood fences from damage due to decay and insects. It is largely non-soluble in water, which combined with the insolubility of the petroleum hydrocarbon, is what protects the fence from rot.
Copperwood will not cause health problems when used as an outdoor construction material. In fact, animals exposed to shelters and watering troughs built from it have shown no adverse effects. However, sawdust from treated or untreated woods, when ingested or inhaled, can cause health problems and reasonable care should be taken that neither people nor animals ingest or inhale it. People who are allergic to pine, will, of course, be allergic to Copperwood, since it is made from pine.
Copperwood has been used with success in greenhouse applications, and so should not harm plants. Because the CuNap is dissolved in a petroleum product, plants that rest directly on the surface of a Copperwood fence in the first couple of months after it is installed may show some browning.
Our fences are bright green when they're removed from the treating cylinder, but they weather to a beautiful Coppery color, and eventually turn silvery grey. All the components of your fence that we manufacture here at Layton's Ozark Timber Sawmill and Fencing, LLC are guaranteed to last 15 years. |
